JP047 Refusing to Surrender. Budapest, Hungary. February 8, 1945.

History: BUDAPEST, HUNGARY, FEBRUARY 8 1945: By late December 1944, the Red
Army had cut off Budapest, encircling both Hungarian and German units but the axis
garrison in the city refused to surrender. After several German hard-fought efforts to
break the encirclement had failed the battle for then city itself begun. The fighting was
extremely ferocious although the defenders suffered from food and ammunition
shortages. One important objective was the southern railway station which was
assaulted by Soviet units on February 8.

Aftermath: The railway station was captured after two days of heavy fighting.
The situation for the encircled axis forces was becoming increasingly hopeless so on
February 11 a desperate breakout attempt was launched. 28,000 Hungarians and
Germans, plus many civilians, moved in three waves westwards hoping to reach the
German lines outside the city. Only 700 succeeded, the rest were either killed or
taken prisoner. On February 13, the city finally fell.
